WHAT IT IS
A cable driven slide system uses an electric motor and a series of stainless steel cables to move the slide room in and out. The cables are routed around the slide opening and work together to apply tension at the corners of the room, allowing the slide to move smoothly and evenly.
These systems are commonly known as BAL Accu Slide systems and are designed to be lightweight while still handling large slide rooms.
HOW IT WORKS
An electric motor and gearbox drive a chain and pulley system that moves the cables attached to the slide room. As the system operates, opposing cables pull the room in or out while maintaining tension at the corners.
Proper cable routing and adjustment are important for smooth operation. The cables should remain properly tensioned and should not be pinched, frayed, or routed incorrectly. BAL’s service information also warns against forcing the system if cable tension suddenly increases.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Watch the slide as it moves in and out. The room should travel smoothly without jerking, hesitation, or one corner moving noticeably ahead of another.
Inspect the visible cables, pulleys, cable attachment points, and surrounding structure. Look for frayed or damaged cables, loose hardware, uneven cable tension, rubbing, or signs that a cable is not tracking correctly.
Also check that the slide fully extends and retracts and that the seals make consistent contact around the room.
COMMON PROBLEMS
Common cable driven slide issues can include improper cable tension, frayed or kinked cables, cables jumping off a pulley, damaged pulleys, loose or misaligned standoff brackets, and the room failing to close completely.
Grinding noises can indicate a foreign object in the pulley area or a cable that is no longer tracking correctly. If a cable becomes frayed, kinked, or unusually tight, stop operating the slide until the cause is identified.

Cable driven slide systems depend on proper cable tension and alignment. Take a close look at all visible cables and pulleys before operating the room, especially if anything looks frayed, loose, kinked, or out of position.
If the slide starts moving unevenly, a cable becomes unusually tight, or you hear grinding or popping, stop operating the slide and inspect the system before continuing.
